Chess
Club
The Chess
Club is open to K-8 students at all levels and meets
each Wednesday for an hour after school. The program
runs from October to March and has doubled in size
since it began five-years ago. Last year more than 75
students participated with the help of four coaches
and five 8th grade “student-mentors.” Players are
encouraged to compete in several scholastic
tournaments, and for the first time last year, St.
Joseph hosted a very successful intramural chess
tournament. For more information, contact: Jim

SPEECH TEAM
The
Speech Team is open to Middle School students and
practice is held on Tuesdays after school from
September to February. Four volunteer coaches work
with students who compete at several meets in a
variety of events, such as dramatic and humorous
interpretation, expository speech and editorial
commentary. Our award-winning team brought home a
number of prizes last year including three $1,000
scholarships to area high schools. In spring 2007,
the PAB gave the speech team a grant to purchase
needed literary materials to enhance and expand the
program. This year and thereafter, the PAB will give
a Speech Recognition Award at graduation. For more
