November 16, 2017

John Hickey

It's not just the students who do outreach at St. Joseph School! Yesterday, for the first time in a long while, the school staff did a service project. We broke up into groups of about 10 people and served St. Mary's Food Bank, Francis House, St. Vincent de Paul, Westside Baby, and Pregnancy and Parenting Support. It was a wonderful opportunity to be together, outside of school, in service to the community…plus we had a lot of fun!

The job posting for director of the middle school is on our website. Please encourage people you know to reach out to me if they're interested in applying.

Finally, in this week's FLASH, you'll read about the Dan Kim and Selina Mohammed. We're trying to highlight the many ways families fulfill their service hours in the hopes that it will encourage everyone to fulfill the annual requirement. If you've not found a way to begin completing your service hours, please reach out, or check here for opportunities.

Thank you!

Dear Parents and Guardians,

Teachers are looking forward to meeting with you during conference week, November 20 - 22nd.  Conversation between home and school regarding each student's progress is very important, and we thank you for being a part of this process.  As you know, this is St. Joe's second year administering the MAP (Measures of Academic Progress) test.  Students and teachers have engaged in conversation after we received the results earlier this fall.  All students in grade one through eight are using the fall MAP data to set a goal in Reading this year.  Middle school students also made goals in other subject areas.  They are looking forward to sharing these goals with you next week.

In the Primary School…

Students in grades two through four will be directly involved in these conferences.  Several skills are reinforced through this student-led process, giving students the opportunity to experience collaboration and focused discussion based on their individual assessment of their areas of strength and areas for growth.  Parent involvement contributes greatly to student success.  Research shows that student achievement is positively affected by strong home/school communication, a shared responsibility.  As you learn more about your student's progress in school to this point, please keep in mind that some of the best data comes from teachers' expert observations of classroom interactions and student participation, especially in the primary grades.

In the Middle School…

Students and teachers are working together to prepare for next week's conferences. To be ready for the conversation, together with your child, look at his/her homework, tests, and grades and comments on Power School before the conference.  You will hear feedback about your child's progress and areas for improvement.  Be ready to ask questions about ways you and the teacher can help your child with some of his or her challenges, as well as areas your child can work on to become an independent, responsible learner.

We wish each and every one of you a very Happy Thanksgiving with your loved ones!

God Bless,

Lil and Mary Helen

There are a variety of ways to help at St. Joseph. Sign up today to volunteer or visit the website to learn more.  We are in need of the following volunteers.

Volunteer Spotlight Dan Kim & Selina Mohammed

We appreciate that Dan and Selina are always able to find volunteer slots that work with their schedules. The volunteer roles they fill are important. They consistently help with the Parish Picnic and Pancake breakfast. For both last year and this year, Dan has volunteered for the 5-hour banking/cashier/fiance job after the Friday night auction and Selina has volunteered for the 4 hour Friday night auction registration job. Additionally, we have seen Selina taking time away from the office to manage a classroom craft project during a class party. Thank you for all that you do for our school!

St. Joseph will be participating again in
The Hour of Code 2017
Space is limited sign up HERE!

The Hour-of-Code started as a one-hour introduction to computer science, designed to demystify "code", to show that anybody can learn the basics, and to broaden participation in the field of computer science. It has since become a worldwide effort to celebrate computer science, starting with 1-hour coding activities but expanding to all sorts of community efforts.

Help St Joe's create that opportunity again this year by signing up your 1st through 8th grader for this one-hour activity during Computer Science Education Week. IMPORTANT: If you are a tech-savvy parent, please consider volunteering to help these students navigate through the fun and interactive tutorials.

Four 1-hour sessions will be offered to students in grades 1 thru 8 in the Library and Computer Lab the week of December 4th. If these dates fill up we will try and add additional days so sign up early.

For more information visit Hour of Code website. To grab a sneak peak of the tutorials the kids will be interacting with click HERE!

Your help is needed! Here is the link to volunteer at the Hour of Code.

Global Reading Challenge (GRC)

4th and 5th Grades Only

  • GRC will meet on Thursday mornings from 7:45 to 8:15.
  • Students will read books that are already selected for them (they will read the same 10 books as the Seattle Public Library has selected for their Global Reading Challenge 2017 teams).
  • St. Joseph School library will provide the books.
  • A competition between the teams will be held in the spring.

Our first official meeting will be this Thursday morning, 11/16, from 7:45 – 8:15 am.  Commitment forms will be handed out.  Please sign and return.  The first round of reading books will be distributed that day as well. The Global Reading Challenge is a fantastic opportunity for students to participate in reading as a team sport.  Children make new friends, read books they perhaps would not have chosen themselves, and learn to work in academic teams. We welcome all students, regardless of reading level.  The more variety, the better!

Please contact Merry Tucker,  if you would like more information.
