November 30, 2017

John Hickey

I hope you all had a great Thanksgiving holiday. We do have much to be grateful for, especially here at St. Joseph School.

Our first outreach day is tomorrow. I hope you've responded generously to the pleas for items for the agencies we support. Whether it's a pack of wipes for Westside Baby or a can of food for St. Mary's Food Bank, everything goes right to the people who need it most.

I'm particularly excited for this outreach day because our dear friend, Juliet, is visiting us from Kenya. Juliet is our primary contact in Mombasa. She connects us with the students we support, shepherds our groups when we visit, and singlehandedly helps keep kids in school. I'm going to announce to Juliet that all the funds we collect at for this outreach day will go directly to our efforts in Mombasa, Kenya. We can fund one student in the best high schools in the country for a little over $700 per year. I'm hoping that our collection will yield much more than that so that we can continue to make a difference in the lives of our friends in Kenya, so please give what you can.

Our outreach days are a great way for our students to see the power that they have to do good in the world. We are, for the most part, very privileged here at St. Joe's. Outreach days are meant to give our students the experience of seeing how that privilege can be translated to generosity.

Next Friday, December 8, is the Feast of the Immaculate Conception. We are trying something a little different with all school Mass. We are going to have, wait for it…two Masses! We'll have Mass at 9 a.m. for the primary school and again at 1:30 for the middle school. Parents are welcome to attend either Mass. Please sit with a class as we won't have dedicated parent seating in the transept.  Why are we doing this? First, we want the Mass to be focused on teaching—having all the students seated closer to the altar will allow Fr. John to speak more about what is being done at various points in the Mass. Two, we want to offer our students a more intimate experience of the Mass. We're just trying this out at a few Masses this year. After that, we'll evaluate it and see if it's something we'll do long term.

Thank you for supporting our first outreach day and for joining us for Mass.

St. Joseph will be participating again in
The Hour of Code 2017
Space is limited sign up HERE!

The Hour-of-Code started as a one-hour introduction to computer science, designed to demystify "code", to show that anybody can learn the basics, and to broaden participation in the field of computer science. It has since become a worldwide effort to celebrate computer science, starting with 1-hour coding activities but expanding to all sorts of community efforts.

Help St Joe's create that opportunity again this year by signing up your 1st through 8th grader for this one-hour activity during Computer Science Education Week. IMPORTANT: If you are a tech-savvy parent, please consider volunteering to help these students navigate through the fun and interactive tutorials.

Four 1-hour sessions will be offered to students in grades 1 thru 8 in the Library and Computer Lab the week of December 4th. If these dates fill up we will try and add additional days so sign up early.

For more information visit Hour of Code website. To grab a sneak peak of the tutorials the kids will be interacting with click HERE!

Your help is needed! Here is the link to volunteer at the Hour of Code.
