A NOTE FROM THE HEAD OF SCHOOL

John Hickey

That Tully's recently shuttered its doors has left our community searching for a safe, fun, and just far enough removed from campus sanctuary. While it is still unclear what will happen with the space that once was Tully's, I'm happy to see that other local businesses are stepping up to fill the gap.

I had a great conversation with the folks at Vios the other day. They are pleased to now open at 7 a.m. (closed Mondays) and encourage kids and parents to stop by. There are lots of tables for doing homework, and I think they pull a great shot of espresso! They want to be sure that the St. Joe's community knows that all are welcome.

Likewise, our friends at Fuel are also ready for an increase in traffic. They've added staff to better serve higher volumes of kids and adults. While they don't have the same amount of space that Vios enjoys, it's a great coffee shop and they want us to be welcome, too.

For the most part, our students did a great job being respectful to the patrons and staff at Tully's. To me, having appropriate levels of freedom is a key stage to our kids' development. For some of our older students, Tully's offered that—a space to hang out, be somewhat independent, but not be under direct supervision. If your daughters and sons were frequent customers of Tully's and have now transitioned to hanging out at Vios or Fuel, please remind them what it means to be a respectful customer. We're doing the same here, especially reminding students of the opportunity they have to be examples of how great St. Joe's kids are!

As you'll see later in this issue, it's time for two favorite St. Joe's traditions: The Christmas Pageant and the Staff Christmas Caroling. More information is below, but I hope to see many of you at both events!

Finally, we are sticking to our policy of not assigning homework over long weekends and extended breaks. We want our students to have a true vacation so that they can relax, recharge, and enjoy time with family and friends.

As this is the last FLASH before Christmas Break, I want to take the opportunity to wish you all a Merry Christmas. You'll all be in my thoughts and prayers over the break.

Patrick

St. Joseph will be participating again in
The Hour of Code 2017
Space is limited sign up HERE!

The Hour-of-Code started as a one-hour introduction to computer science, designed to demystify "code", to show that anybody can learn the basics, and to broaden participation in the field of computer science. It has since become a worldwide effort to celebrate computer science, starting with 1-hour coding activities but expanding to all sorts of community efforts.

Help St Joe's create that opportunity again this year by signing up your 1st through 8th grader for this one-hour activity during Computer Science Education Week. If you are a tech-savvy parent, please consider volunteering to help these students navigate through the fun and interactive tutorials.

UPDATE: Already this week we have had 40 plus students participate in Monday's Hour of Code. We now have two more slots planned on Thursday and given the demand for the early slots we have added another slot for next week.

Upcoming Slots
