February 15, 2018

John Hickey

Yesterday, Ash Wednesday, was the first day of the Lenten season. I hope you'll take some time to talk to you daughters and sons about the Lenten traditions of prayer, fasting, and almsgiving. Mostly, I hope the conversation circles in on taking more time each day to reflect on God's presence in your lives. Lent is the perfect time to be more aware.

Here is a nice, short video by Fr. James Martin, SJ, that might be helpful to you or your kids. America magazine, where Martin works, also just launched a daily Examen podcast.

Another thought: while prayer, fasting, and almsgiving are definitely central to our Lenten journey, it might be helpful for all of us to think about doing something more during Lent rather than giving something up. Or, if you really like to give things up, maybe fill that space up with something else. If, for example, you decide to give up binge watching "Orange is the New Black," fill that time with prayer, or spending time with a loved one, or volunteering. Just an idea.

Happy Lent! You are all in my prayers during this, and all seasons.
